Life Story
Steve Green grew up in Sellersburg, Indiana, where his natural athleticism and competitive drive made him one of the most coveted recruits in the state. When Bob Knight arrived at Indiana University in 1971, Green was among the very first players he targeted and he became the first recruit commit of the Knight era.
Although primarily known as a shooter, as he set records for field goal percentage in a season and career, Green embodied everything Coach Knight demanded: toughness, unselfishness, and an unwavering commitment to the team. Steve was co-captain 1974 and 1975 and MVP '74, Co-MVP '75. He was a two-time All Big Ten first team selection, two-time All-American and two-time Academic All-American. He was a cornerstone of 3 Big Ten Championship squads, CCA championship 1974, 2 NCAA tournaments 1973, 1975, and one Final Four 1973.
Green's excellence extended beyond the court. He was awarded the Balfour Award in 1973 and received the prestigious Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award in 1975. Steve was a recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship that same year. In 2000, he was honored as a member of the NCAA Silver Anniversary First Team — recognizing the most distinguished former student-athletes 25 years after their college careers.
After his college career, Green was a First Round Pick of the Utah Stars in the ABA, going on to play four years in the ABA and NBA and one year professionally in Italy. His professional career was a testament to the level of player Knight had recruited and developed.
Following his playing days, Green pursued a second calling in dentistry, graduating from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1984. Steve practiced as a General and Dental Sleep Dentist from 1984 through 2026. He has been a Past President and board member of Indiana Donated Dental Services. Green is a public speaker on the topics of dental sleep, team building, and sports.
He hosted Steve Green's ARC of Indiana Golf Tournament for several years, raising over $1.2 million dollars for the Hoosiers with developmental disabilities. He and Carl Erskine and their families were honored for their lifetime of commitment to this cause by the naming of the Erskine Green Training Institute in Muncie, Indiana, which provides vocational training for individuals with disabilities.
In 1999, Steve Green was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame and in 2010 was inducted into the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame.
